Lessons & Exam Problems

I finished a lesson or exam and it never saved my results?

Description: When I attempt to take a test or go through a lesson, two SAM windows pop up. If I get one of the windows to close it says that there are errors when I finish.

The error you are receiving is due to the personal firewall running on your machine.  You will need to configure the firewall to successfully submit your results.  Below are directions on how to configure a few of the more popular firewall applications on the market: Norton Internet Securities, the Microsoft firewall included in Service Pack to for Windows XP, and the McAfee Personal Firewall. Please be advised however that there are many other firewall's, if YOUR firewall is not listed please contact the maker of your firewall application.

1. Windows Firewall (includes in Windows XP Service Pack 2)

    - You must be logged on to this computer as an administrator to complete this procedure.

  • Open Windows Firewall
    To do this:
    • click Start
    • click Settings
    • click Control Panel
    • click the Security Center icon
    • click Windows Firewall

  • On the Exceptions tab, under Programs and Services, select the check box for the program or service that you want to allow, and then click OK.

If the program (or service) that you want to allow is not listed:

  1. Click Add Program.
  2. In the Add a Program dialog box, click the program that you want to add, and then click OK. The program will appear, selected, on the Exceptions tab, under Programs and Services.
  3. Click OK.

If the program (or service) that you want to allow is not listed in the Add a Program dialog box:

  1. In the Add a Program dialog box, click Browse, locate the program that you want to add (to add SAM you will need to browse to \Program Files\Course Technology\SAM 2003 and select the file "Sam11.exe"), and then double-click it. (Programs are usually stored in the Program Files folder on your computer.) The program will appear under Programs, in the Add a Program dialog box.
  2. Click OK. The program will appear, selected, on the Exceptions tab, under Programs and Services.
  3. Click OK.

2. MacAfee (Personal Firewall Plus 6)

How do I change the access permissions of an application?

Summary: This article explains how to set the permission level for each application that requests Internet access. This information can also be found here http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq3.asp?docid=372526

Product Versions
  • Personal Firewall Plus 6

Changing permissions

To change a permission level:
  1. Right-click the McAfee icon, point to Personal Firewall, then click Internet Applications.
  2. In the Permissions list, right-click the permission level for an application, and choose a different level:
    • Click Allow Full Access to allow the application to both send and receive data. (Select this option for SAM)
    • Click Outbound Access Only to prevent the application from receiving data.
Note: Once the computer is rebooted, the permission level will revert back to Allow Full Access. If you want the application access level to be outbound traffic only, it is recommended that you change the security level to Tight Security. For information on security levels, click here.
    • Click Block This Application to prevent the application from sending or receiving data.

Note: Previously blocked applications continue to be blocked when the firewall is set to the Open security setting or Disabled. To prevent this from occurring, you can either change the application's permissions to Full Access or simply delete the blocked permission rule in the Permissions list.

To delete a permission level:
  1. Right-click the McAfee icon, point to Personal Firewall, then click Internet Applications.
  2. In the Permissions list, right-click the permission level for an application, and click Delete Application Rule.

The next time the application requests Internet access, you can set its permission level to re-add it to the list.

3.Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall

The Program Scan in Norton Internet Security and Norton Personal Firewall searches your hard drive for Internet-enabled programs and displays these programs in a list. You can then select the programs to which you want to apply firewall rules. Firewall rules configure the firewall to permit or not permit an Internet-enabled program to access the Internet.

Symantec recommends running the Program Scan. If you do not run Program Scan, then each time that an Internet-enabled program tries to access the Internet, a security alert appears. Use the following instructions to run the Program Scan.

Scan for Internet-enabled programs and apply firewall rules using the program interface
Before you run the Program Scan, it is a good idea to remove all existing program rules. This prevents an existing rule or dependency from accidentally blocking access to the Internet. Follow the steps below to clear the program rules list, and then run a scan to repopulate the list.

To scan for Internet-enabled programs and apply firewall rules using the program interface

  1. Start Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall.
  2. In the main program window, click Personal Firewall, as shown in the following image:

    Norton Internet Security 1
  3. After you click Personal Firewall, click Configure, as shown in the following image:

    Norton Internet Security 2

The Personal Firewall configuration dialog box appears, as shown in the following image:

    Norton Personal Firewall 1
  4. On the Programs tab, do one of the following, depending on what you see:
    • If the Manual Program Control list contains a list of programs, then click one of the rules and press Ctrl+A on the keyboard. After you select all of the rules in the list, click Remove, and then click OK to confirm the removal. After the rules are removed, click Program Scan, as shown in the following image.
    • If the Manual Program Control list does not contain a list of programs, then click Program Scan, as shown in the following image:

      Norton Personal Firewall 2

If the "Program Scan" button is unavailable, then you are not logged on as the Norton Internet Security Supervisor account. To log on as the Norton Internet Security Supervisor account, read the document Error: "You have insufficient privileges . . ." or "You do not have the necessary rights . . ." in Norton Internet Security and then return to this document for further instructions.
  5. In the Program Scan panel, check the boxes next to all of the hard drives and partitions that are listed, and then click Next.

    Norton Personal Firewall 3

The progress of the scan is displayed. This may take from 5 to 10 minutes to complete.

    Norton Personal Firewall 4
  6. After the Program Scan finishes, click Check All (as shown in the following image), or manually select the programs that should have Internet access.

    Norton Personal Firewall 5
  7. After you select the programs that should have Internet access, click Next, as shown in the following image:

    Norton Personal Firewall 6
  8. On the final Program Scan panel, click Finish.
You may leave the default selections as they are.

    Norton Personal Firewall 7
  9. Click OK to exit the firewall configuration window.
