Course Requirements


STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITIES

GENERAL INFORMATION:

  • Students are required complete the online Orientation - No exceptions
  • It is recommended that you log in to the class web site 2 to 3 times per week to read the class news and complete assignments.
  • Students will be dropped if they fail to actively participate in the class by submitting all work due within a 2 week period (1 week during summer classes).
  • If a student has an assignment extension then that assignment will not be considered late until the extension expires.
  • The class Private Messenger is the official method of communication for this class. Email is a last resort method communication and should only be used if you are unable to access the class private messenger.
  • If you have a problem completing assignments send me a private message as soon as possible - I'm here to help. If you are not regularly using the class web site or submitting assignments and I don't hear from your then your account may be suspended and you may be dropped.
  • If you cannot find the answer to study guide questions or do not understand concepts presented in the text:
    • Ask the class in the discussion forum under the appropriate topic area.
    • Send a Private Message to Dave
DROPPING THE CLASS:
  • It is your responsibility to complete the necessary forms to withdraw from the class. If you do not drop the class it is possible that you will remain listed on the class roster and receive a grade of F.
ASSIGNMENTS:
  • Assignments can be submitted up to 2 weeks before the due date but may not be recorded in the grade book until the due date.
    See the instructions for submitting assignments for details.
  • Students are expected to complete their assignments without assistance.
    • Support is available from your instructor via private messages and on campus office hours. If your are having an problems which are preventing you from completing assignments please contact me as soon as possible for assistance.
    • You cannot have another student do any part of an assignment for you.
    • You cannot submit work that another student contributed in creating. This means unless you are required to download a data file that for most assignments you will start by creating your assignment with an empty file and input your assignment content without assistance.
    • You cannot cut and paste content from another document.
  • You cannot share a computer with another student in the class.
     
      Academic Honesty
    • I have zero tolerance for any violation of the academic honesty policy.
    • Various methods are used to identify students who share computers and files or submit the work from another student as their own.
    • Any student submitting assignments created or derived from the work of another student will earn 0 points from such submissions.
    • The student who shares their work with another student will also earn 0 points for the assignment.
    • A student who violates the academic honesty policy when taking a test, exam or lab project will have to repeat all tests, exams or lab projects in the classroom with the instructor.
    • A second violation of the academic honesty policy will result in referral to the office of the Associate Dean of Student Affairs for further administrative action, such as a failing grade for the course, suspension or expulsion.

  • Using the college open lab. If you plan to use the college open lab to complete your projects then you must contact me in advance or your work may not be accepted.
  • Assignments must be submitted by the due dates. If your computer has problems you should inform me immediately and follow your backup plan or use one of the college open labs until it is fixed. 
    (Computer problems are not a valid excuse for late work)
  • Some of the lab assignments may require significantly more time to complete.
    Don't wait until the due date to stat your lab assignments!
DUE DATE / TIME
  • All assignments are due by 11:59 PM on the dates indicated in the Due column of the schedule.
EXTENSION TO SUBMIT AN ASSIGNMENT
  • An extension of up to 1 week may be granted for lab assignments and projects. If you need extra time to submit an assignment then you can request an extension via the class private messenger. Email extension requests are not accepted.
  • Extension requests must be made before the due date.
  • There are no extensions granted for tests.
LATE ASSIGNMENTS
  • If your assignment is late it will be graded as follows:
    • Extension granted - less than one week late - No penalty
    • Extension granted - more than one week late  100% penalty.
    • No extension granted - 100% penalty.
QUIZZES / TESTS
  • Quizzes cover material from the class textbook and in some cases the lab books.
  • The quizzes will generally consist of between 15 and 30 questions and can include multiple choice, matching, fill-in or short answer questions.
  • These test questions come from a large pool of questions including material from both the chapter reading and the class web site. 
  • Every test attempt will contain a unique set of questions.
  • Study guide questions will help you prepare for the quizzes
  • Some tests may allow a second attempt. If you attempt a second attempt then you will have a different set of questions than you had on your first attempt.
  • If you plan to take your test in any of the college computer labs you must request permission in advance or you may be unable to start the test.
  • If start a second attempt then the score from the second attempt will be recorded in the grade book even if it is lower. It is recommended that you only take a second attempt if you take additional time to prepare for the test again.

HOMEWORK

  • Students should complete the chapter review questions. I do not collect or grade them but you will find them helpful in preparing for the tests.
  • If you have a question about any chapter review questions please ask and I will explain the answers or provide information where you can find the answer.
CLASS DISCUSSION
  • Students will present their original opinions regarding selected topics related to computing technology. If you include material which you did not create then the source and author for that content must be cited in your posting or no credit will be earned.

Software Copyrights

Students in all classes at Cuyamaca are expected to respect the software copyrights and follow the college policy detailed here.

Checking My Grades
  • Your grades are posted in the class web site. Lab assignment grading notes can be viewed by clicking on the assignment score on the My Grades page.
  • The View All Scores link will display the entire grade book including assignment which have not yet been graded.
  • Your current rank in the class is displayed below your grades. This ranking is private so you are only able to see your name in the list of class scores and how your compare to other students.
GRADING
  • Grading is computed on an absolute scale based on your percentage of the total points possible. The table, listed below, shows the percentages which guarantee the given grades.
  • Each class is different and the percentages required to achieve a given grade may be lowered if deemed appropriate.
